Tanya grew up in The Tampa Bay Area. In 2004 she graduated from University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Fine arts Degree in Ceramics.She moved to a small town in Southwest Colorado the fall after graduation. Shortly after moving to the small mountain town,she met her husband and began her journey as a Wife,Mother and Artist. As a teenager and young adult, Tanya and her Mom would travel much of Florida selling their craft at Festivals and Art shows. This Bohemian-Carny life style is a big influence on her highly characterized figures. Everyday people and their mannerisms,oddities,morbid motifs,ancient art and world culture are often theme’s in her ceramics. Six years ago,she began working as a Properties Master at the local Performing Arts Theater. Most of the props are hand built,altered and up-cycled from the materials easily found at local thrift stores and antique shops. She learned the challenges of working with a diverse variety of materials and grew her knowledge and proficiency during this creative process. This was ultimately an evolution of her artistic development. Creating and building props has expanded her attention to detail and knowledge of multiple mediums. She uses these experiences to diversify the techniques when combining Clay and Mixed Media.
Tanya relishes the metamorphic process of bringing all of these elements together to create her expressive ceramic figures. Lately she has been experimenting with the functionality of her figures. Her recent creations have focused on every day usability, but not changing the aesthetic of her exaggerated figures. Her goal is to make art for that space usually reserved for necessity, so everyday objects are getting a “Character Lift”.
